SHILLONG | Feb 27, 2019:

A day before the February 27 ADC polls in Meghalaya, two men were caught by volunteers of KHNAM in Wahingdoh, Shillong for allegedly distributing money in the name of NPP candidate and former KHADC CEM, PN Syiem.

These two men were caught 'red-handed' by the women and youths (volunteers of KHNAM) late in the evening of Feb 26. The former KHADC CEM is contesting the MDC election from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency.

According to the video which is circulating on social media, these two men were asked to sign a paper by the locals soon after they were caught 'distributing money' to the voters of this locality.

Meanwhile, PN Syiem rubbished the allegations clarifying that the money was meant for the polling agents and not as alleged by other parties.

"The allegations leveled by other parties is unfounded and cannot be accepted," Syiem told reporters here on Wednesday.

Syiem clarified that the incident which happened last night in Wahingdoh was nothing but procedural practice. "It is procedural for candidates to distribute money to their people who oversee the election process at the polling stations to ensure that food, tea, snacks and other accessories are provided to the polling agents," Syiem defended the act.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner and Secretary in charge District Council Affairs department, Tining Dkhar informed today that a complaint has been registered in this regard and that investigation is still going on.
