Meghalaya: Plastic pipes irk JJM beneficiaries in North Garo Hills

 |

RESUBELPARA:

The North Garo Hills (NGH) district administration has reportedly failed to respond to complaints of plastic pipes being used by a contractor while working under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

According to reports, residents of Dalmangre under Bajengdoba Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Block had reported the usage of plastic pipes in over 60 per cent of households, even though the work order specifically mentioned the use of Galvanised Iron (GI) pipes.

“We are well aware of the fact that plastic pipes were used and when this was repeatedly ignored by the contractor, we tried to bring it up to the notice of higher authorities. To date, there has been no response from the administration,” said one villager.

According to the villagers, they had also asked Deputy Commissioner R.P Marak to look into the matter.

But the DC did not respond, they said.

The recent increase in the prices of GI pipes has been a worrying factor for contractors, but the use of plastic pipes, with no Central or State sanction, has raised several questions.
