SHILLONG | March 22, 2019:

Sitting MP and Congress candidate of Shillong Parliamentary seat, Vincent H Pala on Friday said that it will be wrong to blame former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh of initiating the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

"If they are accusing the Congress then let them bring the prove," Pala said while talking to reporters here today.

He recalled that there was a Cabinet note relating to Assam and it is not meant for Meghalaya.

"The basic intention to bring the Cabinet note was to protect those who have been harassed by Bangladesh or Pakistan. It is nothing related to Meghalaya. If they feel it is wrong then they should not have taken the issue all over again. The intention is not a threat but implementing such proposal is a threat," he said.

The sitting Congress MP also accused the BJP of trying to divide between a majority and minority. "They (BJP) understands that they are not going to win election but only through division of Hindu and Muslim. Christians and others," he said.

Stating if the Congress comes to power it do away with the CAB, he said that the CAB will be the root cause of influx.

"The CAB will be the main root to dilute our custom and culture. It's difficult for us to accept. If there is no CAB means there is no BJP," Pala added.

Earlier, MDA common candidate, Jemino Mawthoh had alleged that the Congress too took up the issue of Citizenship Amendment Bill when former PM Manmohan Singh had supported CAB in the Rajya Sabha and added that the party showed no particular interest in vehemently opposing the CAB in the Lok Sabha as well as Rajya Sabha.

"You cannot double speak on issue what BJP is doing, Congress is also doing the same thing," Mawthoh had said.
