Meghalaya: North Garo Hills police seize illegal coal truck

North Garo Hills (NGH) Police, on Monday, detained a truck after it broke down while trying to evade security forces.

The truck suffered a breakdown near Bugakol village, located close to National Highway-62 near 7th Mile.

According to sources, the truck broke down in the middle of the road on February 28 and was abandoned by the time police found it.

“These heavy trucks are moving through the night, through our village road. This movement has almost damaged the main bridge, and God forbid if it does, we are going to be in serious trouble. What we don’t understand is how these trucks are still plying when no transportation of coal has been allowed in Garo Hills,” said a resident from the nearby village.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Dainadubi, sought an investigation into the alleged movement of illegal coal trucks during the night.

According to the federation, the illegalities are being abetted by some unscrupulous elements.

Confirming the development, the Superintendent of Police, North Garo Hills, Abraham T. Sangma, said that the truck (AS 18 9459) was seized on Monday and that an investigation is underway.
