Meghalaya: NIFT permanent campus likely to be inaugurated in Nov by PM Modi

The permanent campus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology located in Mawdiangdiang is likely to be inaugurated in November by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, said Union Textile Minister, Smriti Irani.

Union Minister of Textiles and Women and Child Development, Smriti Zubin Irani along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today inspected the ongoing construction of the permanent campus of NIFT.

"The project is likely to be inaugurated by this November. The progress of worked has reach 98.95 percent," Irani informed after the inspection of the ongoign construction. She also said that it is one of the beautiful campuses in the entire country.

It may be mentioned that the construction of the permanent campus at the 20.13 acres of land at Mawdiangdiang had started on December 06 2013. The original deadline to complete the project was 36 months.  While the initial projected cost of the project was Rs 74.65 crore, the final revised cost of the project was estimated at Rs 105.22 crore.

Later, the Union Minister of Textiles and Women and Child Development held a review meeting with senior officials of the Meghalaya Government in the presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister. Smriti Irani also had a review meeting with the Deputy Commissioners through video conferencing.

During the meeting, the Union Minister interacted with all concerned Departments and took stock of the implementation of various schemes under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

She also went through with the preparation of the Poshan Abhiyan which is to be observed in the month of September this year. The Union Minister, after reviewing the activities of the Government relating to women and child development, appreciated the Chief Minister for some of the positive steps that he and his Government are undertaking district wise to strengthen the future of the country.

 "I am hopeful that under the dynamic leadership of the Chief Minister on all fronts preferring to textiles, women and child development, Meghalaya will scale new heights," she told media persons.

Union Minister Smriti Irani is scheduled to lay the foundation of a textile tourism park on Monday at Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, an official said here.

The textile minister will also review the construction work of National Institute of Fashion Technology centre in East Khasi Hills district during the visit, he said.

The foundation stone for the fashion centre was laid by former textile minister Kavuru Sambasiva Rao in 2013.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will receive her at the Shillong airport in the morning, the official said, adding that Irani is also expected to visit an anganwadi centre at Umsning.
