Tura, Dec 22:

An FIR has been filed against a rape accused for marrying the 17 year old victim and then abandoning the girl after 4 months in the plain belt of Garo Hills. The family of the victim approached the cops, seeking arrest of the accused — Dildar Ataullah Reza.

Reza had allegedly raped the victim in her house about 5 months ago when her mother had gone to her relatives. He then coaxed the girl into a marriage, with the marriage being solemnized through a Court affidavit in the month of August, 2019. It was only after the man left the victim when the family moved the police on the matter. The FIR in the case was filed on Dec 11.

The family further alleged that the accused was politically well connected due to which even the village elders were unable to act against him.

According to the FIR, the accused is a neighbor of the girl and had barged into the house of the victim and sexually assaulted her. When the matter became known, he coaxed the girl into marriage on the excuse of the social stigma attached with rape.

"He continued to rape her over the next 4 months in various places and we only came to know of her abandonment when she tried to take her life. We informed the elders but they too did not act against the accused. We therefore filed a complaint with the police," said the mother of the victim.

The mother further added that the accused was now threatening the teen stating he would singe her with acid. Reza has also been accused of making threats to the life of the 17 year old.

The accused, Reza is currently on the run with a special team being set up to nab him. The mother accused the suspect of intimidation, threat to life, conspiracy, abetment as well as contempt of the order of the Court (marriage affidavit).

"The case has been registered and all legal formalities completed. All efforts are being made to nab the accused," confirmed the superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar.
