TURA | AUG 22, 2020:

The Superintendent of Police pf West Garo Hills (WGH), Dr. MGR Kumar said that actions will be taken against many social media users for allegedly uploading photos of a sexually assaulted victim on Facebook, in the name of seeking justice for her.

A 20-year-old from the plain belt was 'brutally' sexually assaulted by a group of three men on Aug 20, at about 5:30 pm, all of who were former members of a plain belt-based NGO. The accused have been absconding after the incident.

The survivor was referred to Tura after she started bleeding profusely post the incident. She is said to be out of danger.

As per the FIR filed by the uncle of the victim, the teen was returning home from her tuition when she was accosted by the men. She was forcefully taken into the house of one of the accused where they took turns sexually assaulting her.

The uncle also alleged that the parents of the accused were also present in the house but did nothing to stop the gruesome rape.

After the incident became known, some social media users from the plain belt sought justice for the teen but worryingly shared her photos as well as her identity.

Furthermore, even the identity and photos of the accused, who are absconding, were also revealed along with the location where the incident took place.

"We will act against them under Section 23 of the POCSO Act. They cannot reveal details of the victim under any circumstances. I have already issued the necessary directions on the matter," said Dr. Kumar when contacted on the matter.

The laws, especially under POCSO, are strict in terms of ensuring survivor confidentiality.

Meanwhile, efforts to arrest the three absconding suspects are currently on.
