Meghalaya Ichamati clash aftermath: Death toll rises to 3; curfew extended
SHILLONG | March 1, 2020:
The death toll in the aftermath of the clash, which erupted at Ichamati near Shella on Feb 28, has risen to three on March 1 with the latest attack being reported at Pyrken village under Shella PS in the wee hours of Sunday.
The latest victim has been identified as Uphas Uddin (37 yrs). Police informed that Uddin was stabbed and cut by 3 unknown miscreants at his house in Pyrken village at around 2.45 am on March 1.
The victim was brought to Khamati CHC but the doctor declared him brought dead.
Police informed that during enquiry it has been ascertained that 3 persons entered the house and headed to the bed where the victim was sleeping, which indicates that this may be the result of business rivalry or personal enmity.

It may be mentioned that on February 28, a clash broke out between the KSU members and some non-locals at Ichamati soon after a meeting organised by the union on CAA and ILP ended. In the melee, a KSU member identified as Lurshai Hynniewta (35) was injured and shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident in Shella created ripples across Khasi Hills including the capital city of Shillong where several stray incidents have been reported from across the region since Feb 28.
On February 29, several people were injured at Iewduh after they were stabbed by masked men during the busy marketing hours.

A 31-year-old non-tribal businessman from Barpeta, Assam, Rupchand Dewan was killed while seven others were seriously injured in the incident which took place in Iewduh on Saturday morning at around 10.30 am.
Stray incidents reported across the Khasi Hills region on Feb 29 and March 1
On February 29 at around 9:30 pm, some unknown miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the residential compound of Lakshmi Bareh at Pynthorbah Block – 4, Shillong. Fortunately, no one was injured or property damaged in the incident.
In another incident on March 1 at around 12 to 1:00 am in the morning, Rajua Karim (31), resident of West Garo Hills and presently residing in Madanriting was assaulted by some unknown miscreants at Mawthabah in Mawsynram on February 29. He was later shifted to NEGRIHMS.

On the same day, at around 3:15 am, some non-tribal carpenters who were staying at Umtrew, Ri-Bhoi ran away from their homes into the forest after they were reportedly being chased by some local boys in two buses. They have returned to their homes, informed by Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi District.
Curfew extended in parts of Shillong
Curfew has been extended in parts of Shillong as there is every likelihood of serious breach of peace and tranquility which may lead to loss of life and property.
The DC of East Khasi Hills has promulgated curfew in areas falling under Lumdiengjri PS, Sadar PS and Cantonment Beat House from 8 am of March 1 until further orders.
These areas include — From District Council point area leading to Motphran and upto YMCA, entire Police Bazaar, including road from Umsohsun bridge upto Khyndai lad.
Meghalaya DGP urges citizens to refrain from spreading rumours
In view of the prevailing law & order scenario that has arisen in Meghalaya particularly in East Khasi Hills District, the state DGP R. Chandranathan has called upon the citizens, social organisations, religious organisations, Dorbar Shnongs, Seng Kynthei, Seng Samla and all peace loving people from all spheres of life to unite in fighting the menace of propagating and spreading of rumors, hate mongering, regarding the incidents that happened in the State, which may lead to misinformation about the real facts of the situation.
In order to avert further escalation of such untoward incidents, the public at large are requested to visit the official website of Meghalaya Police, facebook page, twitter and instagram whereby news bulletin regarding incidents occurring during the day are being disseminated twice in a day.
