Meghalaya: HNLC suffers jolt after finance secy surrenders before DGP

The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) suffered a major blow after its Finance Secretary Wankupar Marweiñ @ Bahhep Traisiej surrendered before the Meghalaya Director General of Police, R Chandranathan on Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement issued here, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), GK Iangra said that Marweiñ (42) was arrested in 1999 for his involvement with the activities of HNLC.

"After being released on bail, he rejoined HNLC after being released on bail in 2000. He left for Bangladesh where he was imparted arms training in Chittagong Hill Tract, Bangladesh by senior cadres of the outfit," Iangrai said.

Informing that Wankupar was assigned with the post of finance under the political wing of the outfit, the senior police official said that it was recent months that he decided to surrender before the police.

According to AIG, the finance secretary is a key member of the outfit.

"His decision to surrender has come as a major  blow to the HNLC especially the Finance wing which is experiencing a major crisis at the moment," he said.

The AIG said that the HNLC organization is desperately trying to revive its strength and power in the state where several attempts were made to lure vulnerable sections of the youth in the state to join its fold.

"The activities of the HNLC are confined to issuing random press releases and its attempt to strengthen the organization, raising funds through extortions," he said.

According to him, the outfit has also been attempting fresh recruitment of cadres through social media and sensationalizing their presence and strength by using IEDs adding that all such activities have so far been thwarted effectively by state police.
