SHILLONG | JUNE 23, 2020:

Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and BJP MLA, A.L Hek has expressed readiness to take up the offer of the banned militant outfit – Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) for "Peace Talks" with the Government of India.

Addressing media persons in Shillong on Tuesday, Hek said that he will "personally" take up this issue with the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah and other leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

A day after the BJP Meghalaya unit issued a release, expressing its willingness to act as a mediator between the HNLC and the Government of India, the militant outfit has ridiculed the BJP, terming its attempt as a "political stunt meant to earn some brownie points before the public."

"But if the recent offer made by the BJP is a sincere one, then the HNLC welcome and appreciate the offer. And by all earnest will cooperate provided that our commitment and ideologies shall not be compromise and the talks are purely unconditional," said HNLC publicity Secretary, Sainkupar Nongtraw.

Reacting to this, Hek said that the process should be in accordance with the conditions laid down by the Union Home Ministry and if there is a requirement for 'surrender before peace talks', then the same should be adhered to.
