TURA | Sept 19, 2019:

Days after an NGO leader was arrested over rape charges, the Garo Students' Union, Eastern Zone on Thursday clarified that the accused was no longer a member of the student body even as they maintained that he had been impeached more than a month ago.

Riprap T Sangma, the former general secretary of the GSU-Songsak unit was arrested after he raped a minor girl multiple times leading to her impregnation. The accused was arrested by EGH police on Sep 15 after a complaint by the parent of the victim.

The accused had allegedly raped the girl for years and threatened her with her life. His act was only discovered after the girl became pregnant.

In a release sent today, the GSU stated that Riprap had been impeached following complaints by the local unit in Songsak. He was impeached on Aug 21.

Condemning the rape of the minor by Riprap, the NGO added that the accused had done mischief in his personal capacity and not as a leader of the GSU.

"The incident is unfortunate and shocking but he is no longer our member. Therefore the headline on him being a GSU leader is misleading and amounts to defaming the Union and Garo students in general," said the release by the NGO.
