Meghalaya Govt to send delegation to Tripura following clash in ICFAI University in Agartala

A day after ICFAI university in Tripura witnessed a clash between two groups of students involving a few from Meghalaya, the state government will be sending a delegation to Agartala to take stock of the situation following reports of security threats.
This was informed by the president of the Khasi Students' Union (KSU), Lambokstar Marngar after his meeting with Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma along with the parents of the affected students at his chamber on Wednesday evening.
"We have met the Chief Minister to brief about security threat of the 15 students from the State who are studying at the ICFAI University. He (Chief Minister) has given an assurance that the Government will send a delegation to Agartala on Thursday to take stock of the situation," Margnar told reporters.

Informing that there is a sense insecurity among the students from the State, he said that as per the reports, the problem cropped up due to the rift between the students from other parts of North Eastern States and the local students.
"Majority of the students from the State now wants to come back," he said.
When asked about the visit of the KSU delegation to the campus of ICFAI University here, he said that they would like the ICFAI University in Shillong to take some pro-active steps by talking to the authorities of the university in Agartala adding that they will need to intervene to resolve the problem.

When asked if they would sought for closing down of the ICFAI University in Shillong, he said that they would decide after taking stock of the situation.
Meanwhile, a relative of one of the students who is studying in ICFAI University in Agartala, Arsanki Papang said that they are going along with the Government delegation to Agartala.
"There is a sense of fear among the family members since we are not very sure about the security of our children," he said.
According to him, this problem cropped up after the management of the university had issued a circular asking nine of the students from the State to leave the hostel inside the campus. "We would seek the assurance from the university authorities to withdraw the circular of asking the students to leave the hostel. We will decide whether or not to bring the children back after assessing the situation," he added.
It may be mentioned that the KSU members and the family members of the affected students had also met Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling earlier today.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Assistant Inspector General of Police, G.K. Iangrai in a statement issued on Wednesday said that information has been received that certain issues have befallen at ICFAI University, Kamalghat in Tripura, whereby students hailing from Meghalaya are perceiving fear of being attacked and breach of their security.
"The Meghalaya Director General of Police, R Chandranathan has contacted his counterpart in Tripura and was assured that the students will not be affected by any untoward or unforeseen incidents, and that their security will be enhanced," said Iangrai said.
The state police have also asked the students or the family members to contact them for any immediate assistance if required on these numbers: 9436337946 and 6033090114.
On the other hand, the Registrar of ICFAI University in Tripura, Dr. A. Ranganath has informed that the matter has been resolved and there are no more untoward incidents inside the campus.
Classes have already resumed and the situation is normal, he said.
When asked why the girls' hostel was locked by the authorities as seen in one of the videos of the clash circulated by the students, Dr Ranganath said that the girls' hostel was locked because of security reasons.
He said that as seen in the video, the security guard was also present with the students to prevent them to going anywhere near the boys' hostel where the clash was taking place at that time.

He also rubbished allegations that the students were not provided food and that the hostel was still under lock and key.
The hostel was opened yesterday itself after the matter was resolved, though, tight security is in place to ensure no untoward incident takes place, said the registrar.
