TURA | AUG 08, 2020:

The District Administration of North Garo Hills (NGH) will recommend the name of Mima Patiasa K Sangma, who recently lost her life while trying to save her friend, for the National Bravery Award.

"We are going to recommend her name for the bravery award this year as what she did was a selfless act of sacrifice for her friend," confirmed Deputy Commissioner of NGH, SC Sadhu.

On Aug 2, the 13-year-old girl from the village of Resubelpara in North Garo Hills saved a friend who was about to fall into a gorge in Resu Daram, before she tragically fell into the water and drowned.

The girl along with three of her friends had gone to the waterfall by the Daram Gurakol stream near the village of Rongkuchong.

The heroic girl saw one of her friends lose her footing. Without thinking about her safety, she reached out her hand and tried to save her. Unfortunately while trying to do so, she too lost her footing and fell into the river.

The waterfall, which had many rock protrusions and a very strong current, as per locals, led to her death.

The death of the 13-year-old was a devastating loss to her family and friends. Mima was the only daughter. Her friends, including the one who was saved by her, were all shocked by her untimely demise but have all expressed their pride in the last act of the girl.

Immediately after information on the girl's heroics came forth, many social media users have come forward to demand an award for bravery to the girl. Many even began an online movement to have her name included.

"It is not every day that such acts of selflessness are heard of. We lost a very brave 13-year-old who had just begun her life. She gave that up to save a friend. Words will never suffice or heal the pain that her family is going through but her act of bravery has to be recognized. It is the least we can do for her memory," said Chengchang Marak, a resident of Dainadubi in NGH.

Meanwhile, the Koksi Mahari Association of which Mima Patiasa was a part, has written to the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, seeking her inclusion into the national bravery award platform.
