Meghalaya: FKJGP files FIR against hate post on social media

The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP)-East Garo Hills today filed a police complaint against one Abul Kalam Azad, after a Facebook post that took communal hues was posted in the name of the person.

Kalam, the person in question however has clarified his role in the matter stating that his social media account has been hacked and a FIR was filed today, immediately after he was informed on the matter.

While the FKJGP filed their complaint at Williamnagar, Kalam brought the matter up in the Hallidayganj PS in WGH.

According to the NGO, a post was created on Facebook by Abul Kalam which challenged the entire Garo community. The controversial post provided the phone number of Kalam along with his photographs.

"This is an act to create friction between both communities and is illegal. It can cause tremendous problems between both communities. We request immediate legal steps be taken against this act which has tried to create communal disharmony between communities," said the FIR by the NGO.

The first post was made on Aug 22 with the latest one on Aug 24.

Clarifying on the matter, Kalam said that immediately on being informed, he filed a police complaint.

"Someone has created a fake ID in my name and uploaded some anti-social comments on it to create communal misunderstanding. I was informed of it by some people and so I filed a complaint immediately. I have also deposited my phone with the police for verification purposes," said Kalam who filed the FIR on Aug 22 – the day of the first post in his name.

Kalam added that intent of the posts were malafide and sought to tarnish his reputation.

"They are working towards creating communal hatred and misunderstanding and for riots in the state," said Kalam who sought an immediate inquiry into the matter.
