SHILLONG | May 30, 2019:

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Kyrmen Shylla said that Congress candidate, Vincent H Pala has won the election since he is in touch with people at the grass roots.

"He (Pala) is always in touch with the people at the grass roots. He got large amount of votes in Jaintia Hills because of the love of the people," Shylla, who is the UDP MLA from Khliehriat, said when asked about the reason for the defeat of the UDP candidate and Congress nominee, Jemino Mawthoh here today.

He also said that the other factor which led to the defeat of the party candidate is the fear for the BJP and the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

"The people did not vote for the MDA nominee because of anti-BJP wave," UDP MLA from Khliehriat said. He said that the party common candidate, Jemino Mawthoh has the acceptance of the people. "But the fear of CAB has created doubts among the people to vote in favour of the MDA nominee. We all know that the opponents have tried to link the party with the BJP," Revenue and Disaster Management Minister said.

Stressing on the need to strengthen the party in the Jaintia Hills region, he said that the party needs to rebuild the confidence of the people in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.

It may be mentioned that the winner of the Lok Sabha elections from Shillong, Vincent Pala got substantial number of votes from the rural constituencies including the constituencies in Jaintia Hills despite the fact that NPP and UDP have strong presence in many constituencies of Jaintia Hills.

Jemino Mawthoh got votes in the range of  5000 to  8000  votes in four constituencies of Jaintia Hills except  Sutnga Saipung and Khliehriat where he got  13184  and 15870  votes respectively whereas Vincent Pala got votes in the range of  11000  to  15000  votes in all the constituencies of Ri Bhoi.
