Meghalaya: Education deptt. stops further renewal of contract teaching posts

TURA | JUNE 20, 2020:

The Meghalaya Education Department on Friday issued a circular, discontinuing the extension of the 59-day contractual appointment of Assistant Teachers in Government Lower Primary schools in various districts of the state.

The circular comes in the wake of advertisements for the posts of teachers being issued in various districts to make way for permanent teaching posts, with the controversial Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET), being one of the criteria for application.

In the circular, the Director of School Literacy and Education (DSEL), A Ch. Marak has asked all the Sub-Divisional School Education Officers (SDSEOs) of all districts to discontinue the 59-day contracts till further orders.

Contractual teachers across the state have been clamoring for regularization of services contending they stood very little chance of making it due to the age criteria.

They felt some consideration needed to be given for the years that many have spent in service while most also did not pass the MTET tests taken earlier in 2018.

The MTET criteria for teaching posts in the state itself has come under scrutiny after exam papers were leaked with an FIR being filed in Tura in West Garo Hills.

The teachers had recently filed a writ petition in the Meghalaya High Court, seeking a stay on the MTET criteria as a necessary criterion for selection. The case is currently pending in Court.
