SHILLONG | March 27, 2019: Nearly a month after a new executive committee was formed in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), cracks have already started surfacing in the NPP, a coalition partner in the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).The rift within the NPP can be witnessed with the Deputy CEM, Pyniaid Sing Syiem accusing his own party MDC, Pynshngain N Syiem, who is also the chairman of the Council, for trying to bring down the image of the new Executive Committee in the eyes of the public just "to show that he is the fittest to occupy the post of the CEM."

Talking to reporters, Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that it was really surprising to see the Chairman was trying to undermine the capability of the Executive Members of the new EC including the CEM by advising that they should come prepared to the House. It may be mentioned that PN Syiem had told the EC to come prepared after the Deputy CEM had told that he required notice while replying to the supplementary question raised by Congress MDC from Mylliem, Ronnie V Lyngdoh during the first day of the Council budget session.

"The main intention of the Chairman for taking a dig at the EC was to show to the public that we are not capable to lead the Council. He (PN Syiem) wanted to show that he is the only capable person to occupy the chair of the CEM," the Deputy CEM further alleged. According to him, he (PN Syiem) should understand that this is the first session of the new House in the Council adding that it isdifficult for the new EMs to have all the questions in their hand. "We have asked for notice since we do not want to give information which would mislead the House," Pyniaid Syiem said.

He said that all the members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) comprising of the UDP, NPP, HSPDP, PDF and independent MDCs are not happy with the attempt of the chairman to demean the new EC. "We have raised this issue with the party leadership of all the partners of the UDA. We are all not happy with the behavior of the chairman of the Council," Deputy CEM said. When asked if they would move a no-confidence motion against the chairman, he said that as of now, they have no plan to take such a drastic steps. "We hope the chairman would respect the sentiments of the MDCs of the ruling side," he added.

Meanwhile, KHADC chairman, PN Syiem said that his main intention of asking the EC to come prepared was to ensure that the members who raise the question are satisfied with the replies in the floor of the House. "The EMs and even the CEM keep dodging the question by telling that they require more time; It is pointless for any members to raise questions on any pertinent issues inside the House," Syiem said. He, however, said that he has no intention to demean the present EC adding that as the chairman he is expected to remain neutral.

It will be wrong to accuse that I wanted to be the CEM again," he said. The Council chairman also felt that this issue should have been raised within the party."I am surprised that the Deputy CEM had raked this issue in the media," he said.
