The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has opposed the move of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) move to auction mature timber from within its reserves, calling the move akin to destruction of the motherland.

AHAM follows another NGO, AYC in opposing the move which was being moved by the GHADC in an attempt to overcome the cash crunch it is suffering.

In a release by the NGO, the publicity secretary Johny A Marak said that they wholeheartedly opposed the move.

"As higher authority they are bound to protect our forests not destroy them. We did not elect them to sell timber and disturb the ecological balance of the region. Are they not even aware of the negative impacts their move will have," said Marak.

The NGO added that it was common knowledge how forest destruction affects climate change and leads to extinction of plants and animals.

"There are many Acts that are there to prevent this kind of destruction and as such we oppose this move and will not allow it to happen. We urge the GHADC to revoke the order for sale immediately," added Marak.
