Manipur | Hundreds stranded as bridge on NH-37 collapses

IMPHAL, March 1, 2019: Hundreds of vehicles were stranded after a bridge over Barak river along Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 collapsed on Thursday morning.

Officials said that the suspension bridge over Barak river at Sibilong in Noney district collapsed when a truck loaded with iron scraps from Imphal side was crossing the bridge.

It is worth mentioning here that the state government had recently restricted vehicles of over 24 tonnes from plying on NH-2, the second life line of the state, considering the weak condition of the bridge.

Consequently, traffic for light vehicles was diverted to a nearby bridge over the same river, while passengers travelling on the inter-state buses had to cross the area on foot. Officials said that restoration work of the damaged portion may take some days.
