Looking Back – What Tripura gained and lost in 2019

AGARTALA | Dec 31, 2019:

The year 2019 was a bumpy ride for Tripura as the state witnessed many ugly and violent incidents and clashes erupting due to several reasons. Apart from this, the state witnessed many political developments and achievements.

2019 starts and ends with CAA (then CAB) Protests

The year 2019 started and ended with agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019. Earlier this year, when the Central government tried to introduce the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha, the entire Northeast and its respective chief ministers had raised their opposition against the bill causing it to lapse in the RS.

And in December when the bill was re-introduced in the Parliament after deliberations with the CMs of Northeast including the other stakeholders, CAB was passed by both the Houses in the Parliament amid protests in the northeastern states. The people of Northeast continue to oppose the bill though their several MPs and CMs of the NE states including Tripura were in favour of the bill.

The protests against the CAA, which is still ongoing, has crippled normal life in Tripura as violence erupted and curfew imposed, internet suspended across the state in view of the agitations.

The passage of the bill in both the houses has angered the indigenous people of the state triggering massive agitations across the state. The royal scion of Tripura, Pradyot Manikya Deb Barman, who is strongly opposing the Act, had moved the Supreme Court on the issue citing that the Act violates the Instrument of Accession signed between the Government of India and the Maharani of Tripura in 1947.
