Lok Sabha election 2019 phase 2: 52.39% voters turnout recorded in Tripura East seat till 3 pm

AGARTALA | April 23, 2019:

The balloting for Tripura East parliamentary constituency began amidst heavy security on Tuesday.

Security measures have been tightened to avoid any form of law and order problem that was countered with during the phase 1 polls in West Tripura Parliamentary Seat.

The polling began at 7 a.m. and will continue till 5 p.m.

As the campaign for the East Tripura Parliamentary seat ended, section 144 has been imposed which culminates the moving of more than five people in a group with weapons. The international border with Bangladesh has also been sealed and the inter-state border with Assam and Mizoram has also been sealed to avoid any illegal intrusion.

18 company CRPF, 881 TSR, 555 Police force will also be deployed across the entire East Tripura Parliamentary seat jurisdiction.

Though there are 10 contestants in the Tripura East seat, but the three main contenders are Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) sitting MP Jitendra Choudhury, ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's Rebati Tripura and Maharaj Kumari Pragya Deb Barman from the Congress.

Election in East Tripura Lok Sabha parliamentary constituency will be carried out in 7 assembly constituencies. Polling will be held in 359 polling stations in 285 areas. Among them 5 are being identified as very sensitive zones and 138 are sensitive zones. 30 polling stations will be completely monitored by women.

There are total 2, 90,438 voters and among them 1,47,642 are male voters and 1,42,791 are female voters. Two general observers will also be present to monitor the expenditure.

Polling at four booths in East Tripura stalled due to EVM malfunction

Polling has been stopped at a polling centre in Hrisyanmukh area under East Tripura parliamentary constituency due to snags in the EVM.

Polling at at second booth in East Tripura — the Anath Choudhury Para booth in Asharambari — has also been stalled due to EVM malfunction.

Polling is yet to begin at Jubaraj Nagar and Bhagyapur centres in Dharmanagar under East Tripura. EVMs are being replaced after malfunctions were reported, according to election officials.

Congress candidate in East Tripura Pragya Debbarman has alleged that vote rigging occured in several polling booths. Debbarman said he has lodged a complaint with the election observers.
