Incessant rain causes flood in Nagaland, 2 dead

Incessant rain caused flood in parts of Dimapur and Phek districts of Nagaland, claiming two lives, an official said here on Sunday.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio visited the affected villages of Dimapur district.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said low-lying areas of 13 villages in Dimapur district and Phek, the headquarter town of Phek district, were submerged by rain water.

Nagaland received a total rainfall of 809.75 mm in the past two days, Viya said.

One person died due to wall collapse in Dimapur district while a woman drowned in Phek town on Saturday, NSDMA Secretary Lhouchalie Viya said adding that two others were injured in wall collapse in Phek.

He said four kuchcha houses were destroyed in the flood at Sangtamtila village in Dimapur district.

The search and rescue teams have rescued 131 people from three locations in Dimapur district.

The authorities have opened seven relief camps, Viya said.
