Helping hand: Abandoned woman, recued & given shelter at old age home in Sikkim

GANGTOK | JAN 7, 2020:

Residents from Seleptanki rescued an abandoned woman aged around 45-50 years on Monday, who was later taken to a shelter home by a group of active social workers in Gangtok.

The woman was spotted first a couple of weeks ago, roaming helplessly at SelepTanki. It was difficult for the locals to know her antecedents and where she came from as the woman cannot speak, the locals suspect that she was brought to SelepTanki and left abandoned.

The woman's identity is yet to be known, she was given a temporary shed at SelepTanki for few days as no one came forward to claim her.

Meanwhile, locals took care of the poor lady and later got in touch with a social worker and a journalist Ajay Agarwal on Tuesday morning and informed about the plight of the abandoned woman.

After being informed, Agarwal and his team then got in touch with local Pintso Bhutia and together with Nischal Tamang and Jeewan Tamang and visited the spot. They found that it was urgent to get the helpless woman to a permanent shelter given the acute cold weather conditions that could risk her life.

The team contacted the DC (East) and went to the DAC (East) to get a clearance from the district authorities and later took the lady to Lee Al Old Age Home at Tintek where she was given shelter after completing all the formalities.
