Meghalaya: One dead, 20 BSF jawans injured after bus falls into 100-ft gorge

One person lost his life and at least 20 BSF jawans and a civilian (driver) were seriously injured after an 'over-speeding' bus went offroad and fell in a 100-feet deep gorge at Umtyraa in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya on Wednesday at around 4.30 pm.

Police informed that the bus (AS 05 C 2034) which was requisitioned by BSF ferried as many as 20 BSF personnel of the 93rd Battalion.

BSF officials said that the jawans were returning to base from NRC duty from Jagi Road (Assam) and traveling towards Silchar via Meghalaya in convoy of two civil buses, three heavy vehicles and one Bolero.

However, one bus met with an accident after it fell into a gorge from the road (NH 06) at Umtyra.

Police and BSF officials informed that the co-driver succumbed to his injuries at the Khliehriat CHC. The 20 injured jawans and the drivers have been shifted to NEIGRIHMS hospital in Shillong for further treatment.

The SHQ BSF Jowai is in process of evacuating the seriously injured persons to Shillong for treatment.

"We are thankful to the doctors and staff of Khliehriat CHC for their prompt treatment of the injured and also to the government and NGOs' ambulances, Dorbar Shnongs and Cement companies for their assistance," said Incharge SP of EJH, Lakador Syiem.
