Ahead of the Assam assembly polls, the Bodoland People’s Party (BPF) led by Hagrama Mohilary has snapped ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and decided to be a part of the ‘Grand Alliance’.

Mohilary informed that the decision was taken at the 11-member core committee meeting of the BPF held in Baksa on February 27 for “peace, unity and development”.

It may be noted that the Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Communist Party of India, CPI (Marxist), CPI (Marxist-Leninist) and Anchalik Gana Morcha had come together and formed the Grand Alliance in January 2021 to take on the BJP in Assam.

“To work for peace, unity, and development and to bring a stable government, free from corruption in Assam, the BPF has decided to join hands with the MAHAJATH,” Mohilary said in a statement on Facebook.

In the recently concluded BTR elections, the BJP had contested the poll in alliance with Pramod Boro-led United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and won the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) election.

In 2016, the BJP scripted history and formed the government for the first time in the state ending Congress’s 15 year rule. BJP and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won a combined 86 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly.

Currently, the BPF has three ministers, namely Pramila Rani Brahma, Chandan Brahma and Rihon Daimary in the Sarbananda Sonowal led government in Assam.
