Assam keeps strict vigil against poll code violations

GUWAHATI

The Assam election department is keeping strong vigil against violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) which came into effect with the Election Commission of India’s announcement of the three-phase election in the state on February 26.

“Till today, five cases of MCC violations have been reported in Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Kaliabor, Jorhat and Lakhimpur election districts. The complaints involve postering in public places, high volume marriage parties, scooter distribution to beneficiaries, placing of banners without No Objection Certificate (NOC) and dispatching of blankets in trucks etc,” a statement said on Wednesday.

Concerned officers have taken immediate action on receipt of the complaints and disposed of the cases on the spot, including seizure of the blankets and keeping it in safe custody, the statement said.

“On the other hand, till today, an amount of ₹ 64.43 lakh in cash and liquor worth ₹ 53.58 lakh, have been seized by police, flying squads and excise officials across the state,” it added.
