Assam elections 2021: Jailed anti-CAA activist Akhil Gogoi files nominations from hospital

 |

GUWAHATI:

Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi on Monday submitted nomination papers for the Sivasagar and Mariani Assembly constituencies from the Gauhati Medical College Hospital(GMCH).

The jailed peasant leader is also the president of Raijor Dal and has been languishing in jail over a year after the National Investigation Agency charged him on sedition.

Raijor Dal, which has already forged an alliance with another regional party, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), has announced a list of 18 seats for the first two phases of Assembly election on March 27 and April 1.

Both the regional parties were floated at about the same time last year.

Earlier, as Gogoi came out to file his nomination papers, a chaotic situation prevailed on the premises of GMCH, with the anti-CAA activist shouting slogans, urging people of the state “to oust the incumbent party from power”, while his vociferous supporters joined in, demanding his release from jail.

Police had to subsequently disperse the firebrand leader’s supporters and tighten security arrangements on the premises of GMCH.

Gogoi had, earlier this month, proposed to the Opposition parties to field one common candidate against every BJP nominee, “to defeat the saffron party” in the ensuing polls.
