IN PICS | Meghalaya: NGOs lock down establishments for disregarding Nongkrem Dance

The influential Khasi Students' Union (KSU) and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), student bodies of Meghalaya, on Thursday shut down all establishments within the jurisdiction of East Khasi Hills district, which remained open on a local holiday on account of Nongkrem Dance.

"The union went and closed down all the banks in Khasi Hills for disregarding our local tradition and culture — Ka Shad Nongkrem (Nongkrem Dance) which is being observed once a year. We cannot just sit quietly and allow these establishment to disrespect our culture," said a KSU leader Rapborlang Nongrum.

The unions has further warned the banks and their employees to refrain from opening their establishments on special days like today as a mark of respect to the prevailing traditional practices of the indigenous tribes of the state.

The NGOs' members today went and closed down the HDFC bank, Apex bank, Meghalaya Rural Bank, BOI, Axis bank, State Bank, Airtel Office, Canara Bank, Shillong Cooperative bank, Punjabi Bank located in Shillong.
