KOHIMA | AUG 26, 2020:

Kohima on Wednesday witnessed the closure of all pharmacies and other medical clinics during the 24-hour shutdown of medical services called by the Nagaland In-Service Doctors Association (NIDA) on August 26.

The state-wide shutdown was called by the NIDA as a mark of protest against the alleged assault on doctors and health workers by Nagaland Police.

"It was very unfortunate that during such pandemic, three of the doctors were physically assaulted by Nagaland Police," said NIDA president, Dr Ritu Thurr.

NIDA expressed its opposition against the alleged attack on Dr Atoka Wotsa, a pathologist on COVID-19 duty at the Truenat test centre in Chimukidima, Dimapur by personnel of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB of Nagaland Police) recently.

On April 3, Dr Nosezol Sezo, the Senior Medical Officer of Community Health Centre Medziphema, was physically assaulted by Special Task Force (STF) personnel at Purana Bazar. The incident created an uproar and drew condemnation from all sections of society.

Again on April 17, police personnel assaulted another doctor at Wokha town.

Dr Thurr  said that the NIDA leaves the rest to the government to take necessary investigation and submit the enquiry report at a stipulated time.

The NIDA also had a meeting with the Chief Secretary wherein he has assured the association that all the inquiry will be done in a fast track manner and the report will be tabled in 3 to 4 days.

It may be mentioned that a counter FIR was filed by the police personnel at West Police Station in Dimapur.

"I am not aware of the details of the counter FIR," Dr Thurr said.

He further said that both the parties need to revisit themselves and re-educate the frontline workers on the need to maintain discipline.
