The substantial hike in the fee structure of Tripura Medical College (TMC) after the BJP came into power has irked many from the student community in Tripura, especially those aspiring to pursue a career in the medical domain.
As per the Supreme Court's direction, all private medical colleges have to constitute a committee for review of fee structure under the supervision of a retired high court judge and same was the case with TMC.
In view of this, a student from Tripura has expressed her concerns in the video below. The video was initially uploaded on Twitter after which it went viral.
Tripura medical College being a non-government run institution, as per the recommendation of the fee enhancement committee, the TMC management hiked its fees from Rs. 5,13 lakh to Rs. 9.22 lakh annually for undergraduate medical course and similar fee hike for post graduate course. As a result, for completion of MBBS course in TMC, a student has to pay Rs. 36.88 lakh instead of the existing 20.52 lakh.
TMC has 100 MBBS seats and its previous year's fee structure is as under:
1st year: Rs. 5,13,920
2nd year: Rs. 4,80,000
3rd year: Rs. 4,80,000
4th year: Rs. 4, 80, 000
5th year : Rs. 2, 40,000
The revamped fee structure of TMC is as under:
1st year: Rs. 9,22,920
2nd year:Rs. 8,77, 530
3rd year:Rs. 8, 77, 530
4th year:Rs. 8, 77, 530
5th year:Rs. 4, 38, 765
Student organizations of different political parties have began movement against the fee hike. While students continue to face a dilemma whether or not to continue their passion due to inability to afford the new fee structure, it is important to note that over 1,200 doctors graduated from Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Tripura Medical College (TMC) since the colleges started functioning in 2005. However, the government failed to rope in even half of them in service.
Counselling for admission in TMC will begin from June 25 next.
