Tripura: No magisterial-level interference in media censorship and news dissimination

AGARTALA: There would be no interference in the functioning of media,assured West District Administration.

"The Election Commission issued Model Code of Conduct which has already been imposed. The issue has been discussed in a meeting with all-political parties today. And I assure on behalf of District Magistrate that there would be no interference in media role," West Additional District Magistrate – Kuntala Das told the media today evening.

However, she totally denied of any magisterial-level initiative for censorship on any media channel. The District Magistrate's reported attempt to interfere in media function by disconnecting network of media channels for airing a video showing anti-social activities of CPM candidate for by-elections invited sharp reactions from media personnel.

According to the video footage, Jhumu Sarkar, Barjala candidate fielded by the ruling party was seen fighting with females in drunken condition. The incident occurred at Lankamura on October 12 centering immersion of Durga idol.

After that, the TV channel was censored in visuals for few minutes. The by-elections in Barjala seat and Khowai seat would be held on November 19. Results of the elections would be declared on November 22.

Election Commission of India has declared schedule of by-elections on October 17. The notification of the elections schedule would be released on October 26.

Candidates would need to file their nomination papers by November 2. However, their papers would be scrutinized on November 3. The candidates could withdraw their nomination papers on November 5.

A total of 39,907 voters have been enrolled to exercise their franchise through EVMs in the by-election. Of the total, 20,972 are males while the rest 18,935 are females.
