Tripura: Gymnast Dipa Karmakar opts to train in India

Dipa Karmakar is a jewel in the sporting world of India and being from the Northeast makes us very proud that a girl from Tripura has defied odds and is the first woman from our country to ever qualify for the Olympics in gymnastics. Dipa unlike many other athletes from our country who have qualified for the Olympics has opted to train here itself. She is training under Bisweswar Nandi at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. Her coach believes it's irrespective where Dipa trains as she has come so far with her own Indian coaches and there is no need to go abroad and train even though she has received multiple offers not the Sports Authority of India (SAI) but from many sponsors.

The games begin in Rio, Brazil on August 5 and the equipment at the training center in Delhi is world class and has all been sponsored by SAI. This 22 year old has overcome one of the biggest difficulty faced by a person who strives to be a gymnast. She was flat footed. With training and dedicated exercises she has been able to overcome this. In a country of 1.2 billion people, there has never been an athlete in 52 years to qualify for the Olympics in gymnastics and never in our history has there been a female gymnast at that level.

The amount of work and pressure put on an athlete is immense and the dedication and will of Dipa has poised her for greatness. Whether she achieves this at the Olympics or not, she has the whole country rallying behind her. She was only 6 when she started and her team and coaches all realise how hard and competitive the sport is but they believe she can achieve accolades with unrelenting hardwork.
