Kohima, July 3: In an unfortunate incident, two persons lost their lives and seven others were injured as a truck skidded off the road and fell into deep gorge between Akuluto and Lokobomi village in Zunheboto district in Nagaland on Sunday.
Sources informed that the bad road conditions in that area can be attributed for the accident which claimed two lives. A truck carrying essential commodities to Zunheboto town from Jorhat skidded off the road Sunday afternoon and fell into a deep gorge some 500 meters.
One person died on the spot and another died while on the way to hospital at Akuluto. At least 7 have been injured, out of which 5 are stated to be in serious condition. Sources said the inured have been shifted to government hospital in Akuluto town.
Akuluto administration along with public rushed to the area after the accident and retrieved the dead bodies and injured persons. Zunheboto has the worse roads in the State and the people have not been raising much voice.
All roads leading to Zunheboto are in deplorable condition and with the onset of monsoon the roads have become almost riverbeds. Bad roads have claimed several lives in the State in the last couple of years.
Organisations have been protesting but the condition of roads has deteriorated from bad to worse. The road from Mariani-Mokokchung to Zunheboto has been declared a National Highway but remains in a pathetic condition. This road is the main lifeline of Zunheboto district.
