TURA: Subhankar Paul, a young doctor from Tura has received the best resident surgeon award for 2017 on the occasion of the Founder's Day of Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. He received the Dr. Chakravarty Memorial Award for the best surgical resident-2017. The award was handed over by the founder and chairman of Apollo Hospitals, Prathap C. Reddy.
The award is decided on the basis of academic activities such as papers, presentations and publications and a voting amongst all the consultants of general surgery to select the best resident surgeon.
Reddy presented Paul with a certificate and a book of surgery, 'Fischer's-Mastery of Surgery', worth Rs 10,000.
Paul is a resident of Tura who excelled in his school days at Sherwood School. He was one of the top 10 candidates from the state in Class XII in 2005 and ranked fifth from Don Bosco College, Tura.
After completing his MBBS from the state he was given a posting in a remote health centre in East Garo Hills. He topped in the all India entrance test and was selected in the field of surgery by Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.
"During counselling I chose Apollo Hospitals. It's an honour to come from a small town and work and learn under legends in the field of surgery. It is one thing to receive the award and another to carry on the legacy of the hospital. I hope I can live up to the expectations of my teachers and will work harder to prove myself worthy of the award," he said.
Having come from a region like Garo Hills where healthcare is appalling in rural areas, Paul is keen to extend a helping hand.
"I would like to see quality healthcare available to the people of Garo Hills and the North East and I am prepared to use my expertise once I complete my post graduation," said Paul who will complete his tenure at Apollo in the middle of this year.
