Meghalaya: When hearts beat as one; WKH citizens donate Rs 3,23,000 to families of Nongspung road accident’s victims

NONGSTOIN, March 18 2017: After almost a month since the tragic truck accident at Nongspung village in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya which killed 20 people, the citizens of the district have voluntarily collected money to the tune of Rs Rs 3,23,000, the same of which was handed over the families of the victims.

According to the official FB page of the Deputy Commissioner Nongstoin, the DC Office has handed over Rs 3,23,000 to the families of the victims of Nongspung road accident which occurred on February 26th 2017.

WKH DC Arun Kembhavi said "We didn't ask for any contribution from anyone but the money was collected voluntarily by the various NGOs, general public and different offices under District Administration."

It may be mentioned that as many as 20 church goers (16 died on the spot, while 4 others succumbed to their injuries in the hospitals) lost their lives in a tragic accident when a truck they were boarding to attend a Church service (Synod) rammed into a barricade along the national highway after the driver lost control of the vehicle due to over-speeding.

The incident which shook the entire state also caught the attention of the national media and subsequently reached the ears of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Recently, the Prime Minister has announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured. The Government of Meghalaya has also sanctioned Rs 50,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 10,000 each to the injured.
