Meghalaya: Yet another blow for GNLA: Surrendered commander’s aide surrenders in Tura
TURA, Dec 10: The spate of surrenders of members of the proscribed Garo National Libeation Army (GNLA) continued unabated with the surrender of another accomplice of Baichung Ch Momin, who surrendered yesterday to the police team of South Garo Hills.
Gongbin, (Lingdho N Sangma of Mandalgre) who had allegedly been left behind after his leader's surrender, came to the Rongram outpost to lay down arms and add to the already huge numbers of surrenders of militants of the Garo Hills region. Sources in the meantime pointed to the fact that members of other outfits too could follow suit, given that demonetization had dented their coffers.
Lingdho is from the 6th batch of the GNLA and had joined them in 2014. He was with Sohan and Baichung.
According to sources, Gongbin was with the former GNLA leader when the latter left camp on the promise that Gongbin would come behind him. However even after three days of walking through dense vegetation from the Durama area of East Garo Hills to Chokpot and his eventual surrender, Gongbin, who was a little skeptical of how the entire episode would play out, waited for information of his leader's surrender before taking the plunge himself.
He later made the walk from their hideout in Durama to the Rongram outpost where he surrendered to the police.
Efforts were being made even during the surrender ceremony of Baichung to contact Gongbin to come forward thought he initially insisted on his leader's presence during the process. He later relented after assurances from various quarters to come forward.
His surrender continues to dent the resources of the GNLA which faces a huge crisis of leadership as well as manpower as Sohan D Shira struggles to keep his coterie together.
