Meghalaya: Home Minister & son gets clean chit in Marvelene’s Inn trafficking case

SHILLONG, Aug 24, 2017: The Meghalaya Police has given Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh and his son a clean chit in the Marvelene's Inn Trafficking case, however, confirming the involvement of the guest house's management in the case.

Police stated that they received no evidence against the owners of the Inn, who also happens to be the immediate family members of Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh. "With regards to the complaint against the owners and management, we have found that the management was involved and two people have been charge sheeted," said EKH SP City, Vivek Syiem on Friday.

Stating that there are evidence of only the management being involved in running the racket, Syiem said, "As alleged, there is no iota of evidence to prove the involvement of the owners in the case."

It may be reminded that the case related to trafficking of a minor girl aged 14 allegedly for prostitution, which unfolded at Marvelene's Inn on December 15, 2016 witnessed series of developments over the year leading to the arrest of Mawhati legislator and former HNLC chief, Julius Dorphang include several other people.

Syiem informed that the Inn manager, Edmund Paul Kharir and the waiter Usha Debarma who were arrested in this relation, are yet to face trial. "The case against the duo has been charge-sheeted," Syiem said adding that there are three other cases relating to trafficking and sexuasl exploitation of a minor. "All of them have been charge sheeted and the trials are yet to start," added the SP.

Based on the complaints of the State Child Rights Commission and the girl, 11 cases were registered and 19 persons were arrested and in all five cases were charge-sheeted.
