Meghalaya DGP allegedly unhappy over proposed move to appoint security advisor, CM denies it as rumours

Amid the vulnerable situation in the state following the May 31 clash at Motphran, the Meghalaya Government is faced with yet another problem after the state top cop, SB Singh has threatened to step down if the former goes ahead with the appointment of a security advisor to the state government.

Sources informed that the state DGP has expressed disappointment and unhappiness over the proposed move of the Conrad Sangma led MDA government to appoint a security advisor as it would undermine the status and functions of a DGP.

It may be reminded that Singh was due to retire on April but his service was extended for another 6 months.

There were reports suggesting that the government is contemplating to appoint former police officer, Kulbir Krishan, said to have close links with the BJP, as the security advisor to the state government.

This alleged interference of the BJP, which is also part of the NPP led coalition government in Meghalaya, has put Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in a tight spot.

Sources informed that Singh has already made his decision known to the chief minister prompting Conrad Sangma to keep the decision to appoint a security advisor in abeyance.

However Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has termed the report as wrong and says that nothing of this sort has taken place.

This development comes at a very critical time as Shillong is yet to fully recover from the aftermath of the May 31 clash at Motphran between protestors and the security forces.
