Meghalaya: Concerned Shillongites distribute food to poor, homeless amid lockdown

SHILLONG | March 27, 2020:

Promising that none would sleep hungry, the Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara committee members, Shillong on Thursday distributed food to homeless people on the streets in various locations.

The lockdown period has made it worse for the country to climb up the economic ladder and makes it even worse for the daily wage workers and homeless.

The volunteers were spotted in four locations namely GS Road, two locations near Shillong Municipal Board office and one near Kench's Trace

Dr Kamaljit Singh, a member of the committee said that they will continue their service till the lockdown is lifted. He also said that they are also planning to extend their meal services twice daily and, they would be providing meal to around 250-300 homeless people of the city.

Apart from the sikh community, people from different professions and communities are also coming forward to lend a helping hand to the poor and homeless people in this time of crisis.

Michael kharsyntiew, a social worker and a resident of Upper Jaiaw has also stated that free food relief distribution for the homeless, street children, daily labourers was distributed from March 21 and he along with his team deliver the food items to the people every night.

He distributes the cooked food items in many areas like Police bazar, jailroad , Motphran, Iewduh, Keating road , Polo, Barapathar and others.

Meanwhile, the Shillong Marwari Community after distribution of 40 water tanks and other stuffs have now decided to distribute free ration to the poor through the Deputy Commissioner.
