Meghalaya: Christmas turned ugly for a 13 year old, perpetrator absconds

Tura, Jan 6: Christmas turned ugly for a 13 year old after she was allegedly raped and later threatened with her life by the perpetrator of the crime on Dec 25. The act becomes even graver as reports of the culprit being the minor girl's distant brother in law has emerged.

The incident, which comes in the wake of various similar crimes in the state, has left many of the region shocked at its abrasiveness.

The suspect has been identified as Honeybee K Sangma. Sangma however has gone into hiding since yesterday after his act was discovered by villagers.

According to sources, the girl had gone to the Church for prayers on the evening that the incident took place in the village of Chokdengre village under Tikrikilla PS in West Garo Hills.

In between service, she along with another 10 year old minor went to the toilet to relieve themselves, Sangma pounced on them. He threatened the 10 year old who ran from the place before dragging the 13 year old by the hand and raping her at a remote place nearby.

After the incident, the girl was threatened by Sangma with her life if the incident was reported to anyone. However rumours of the incident occurring in the village were doing the rounds.

"The girl did not want to speak on the incident as she was very scared but when the village elders spoke to her she narrated what happened, confirming suspicions of rape," said Walseng Sangma, the GSU president of Tikrikilla who today helped file the FIR for the victim.

The perpetrator, Sangma was later tied up by villagers who met to decide on what to do in the case. However, when the villagers checked once again this morning he had managed to break through his ropes and escape.

"We thoroughly condemn this act of the culprit and seek the most stringent action against him. He has to be caught and put behind bars where he belongs. This is a shameful act and he cannot be let off like this," added Walseng.

Police sources later confirmed the receipt of an FIR in the case.
