Meghalaya: Centre to finalise proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule soon

The Centre will soon finalise the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, said the Union Home Ministry joint secretary (NE), S Garg here on Friday.

Speaking to media persons after a meeting with the state government and various stakeholders including the members of the KHADC and JHADC , the Union Home Ministry joint secretary (NE), said that there have an agreement on majority of the points on the proposed amendment adding that they are some minor issues which need to be resolved.

The meeting which was attended by Sseveral NGOs, members of the District Councils, traditional heads and senior officials of the State Government, also discussed in length about financial power of district council, apart from article 280 of the constitution.

"We deliberated on many important issues including Article 280 and also on the rules and sub rules of the Sixth Scheduled," Garg said adding that "This is the third draft of the amendment. I will place the various issues raised in this meeting to the Centre. We will finalise the proposed amendment very soon."

Later, KHADC CEM PN Syiem said the issue regarding increasing number of seats in District council was also raised during the meeting.

He also said there was a demand for inclusion of atleast two members of the district council into the state finance commission. However, the final decision will be taken by state cabinet before submitting its view to the centre.
