Meghalaya: Body of abducted man found in Shillong

SHILLONG – A fully decomposed body of man was found in the city by the police after arresting five persons in an alleged case of abduction. East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang said the body was recovered from a jungle at Mawlai Mawtawar on Sunday. Initially, police had arrested five persons, including a Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC)  cadre in connection with an abduction case.

A missing person's complaint was received from Specially Wanniang of Mawtawar Laitlum on June 27. The complainant said her 25-year-old son went missing. Subsequently, Wanniang received a phone call informing that her son was in custody of the caller who demanded Rs 30 lakh for his release.

Mawlai Police immediately took up the investigation and arrested five suspects. These included Klemenroy Nongtri of Mawlai Nongkwar, John Fishal Lyngkhoi (an HNLC Cadre arrested earlier) of Mawlai Mawtawar, Richard Wahlang of Mawlai Nongkwar, Shanborlang Rani of Mawlai Syllai Kariah and Kitboklang Kharsyntiew of Mawiong.

Most of the suspects had criminal records. "But none of them were cooperating with the investigating agency," Kharkrang said. However, on Sunday, based on some leads, a search was conducted in the jungle at Mawlai Mawtawar and fresh dug earth was found. The excavation was done in the presence of a Magistrate and a fully decomposed male body was found. "The body is believed to be that of the missing person. Further investigations are on," the SP stated.

Meanwhile, the SP further informed that Shillong Traffic Police recovered Rs 34,800 as fine for traffic rule violation by taxi and auto drivers in the past three days. The violations were related to overloading. The police also detained 134 violators.
