Meghalaya: Authorities lift ban on internet services in Garo Hills; ban to continue in other districts

From Our Correspondent, TNT News | Tura, June 12, 2018:

After almost 4 days since internet and SMS services were suspended in Garo Hills region of Meghalaya following the GHADC episode, the government has finally lifted the suspension and services has been restored this afternoon.

Following the situation in GHADC, wherein NGOs of Tura barged into the offices of the Council and caused a commotion asking for the removal of an MDC from the office of the Forest Advisory Committee, internet and SMS services had been suspended over fears of fake information going viral leading to a law and order situation.

Internet and SMS services were suspended from 3 pm on Friday, June 8 and again extended on Sunday, June 10 for another 48 hours before the same was restored today, leaving the region without internet for 96 hours.

Meanwhile the stoppage of services has not gone down well with residents, who felt the matter had been escalated beyond reasonable understanding and should have been restored earlier.

"A clamp of 24 hours should have been enough. Students were due for their exams and depended completely on the internet for information and have been affected very badly. We hope the administration understands the situation and nothing like this happens," said one resident.

Another felt the clampdown over 96 hours was taking it a little too far. "The situation should have been taken care of by the state instead of putting more than 1 million people to ransom on this matter," added another.
