Manipur: Assam Rifles personnel allegedly assault two civilians at Kangpokpi district

Imphal, Mar 23:  Personnel of the Assam Rifles severely assaulted two male civilians at Kangpokpi district in Manpiur on the evening of March 21. The two victims identified as Lamgoulen Kipgen (27), s/o Seitinmang Kipgen of Songjang Pakang village under T Waichong sub-division in Kangpokpi district and Lunkhomang Kipgen (26), s/o (L) Lalpao Kipgen of Lhangnomphai village in Saitu-Gamphazol sub-division; are presently hospitalized at the local CHC in the area. Lamgoulen Kipgen is the general secretary of Songjang Pakang Youth Club while Lunkhomang Kipgen is the chief of Lhangnomphai village.

As per media reports, it is found that the victims were picked up at Traffic Point in downtown Kangpokpi, IT Road by around 38 Assam Rifles personnel in civil dress at around 5:30 in the evening.

The victims alleged that they were first blindfolded and then assaulted behind Yaikongpao UJB School at Yaikongpao village and were releases at different locations and timings. Kipgen and Pakang received severe bruises in their thighs and hips.

Condemning the alleged brutality of the 38 Assam rifles personnel, civil society organizations of Kangpokpi district have asked for an apology from the assailants before the court of Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi district according to the Kuki customary law on or before March 24. On failure of the action from part of the Assam Rifles, the CSO said they will take further legal action by lodging an FIR.
