Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on Monday morning was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Science-AIIMS and is stable under close observation according to a release issued by the hospital authority on Tuesday.
"He is on injectable antibiotics and will stay in the hospital till his condition improves," said the bulletin issued by AIIMS at noon on Tuesday.
A late night bulletin issued previously by the hospital said that the leader has been diagnosed with a "urinary tract infection", and a team of doctors are closely monitoring him.
According to source at AIIMS, the leader who retired from active political life in 2005, has "reduced kidney (he has one functional kidney) and lung function due to the infection".
At 93, Mr. Vajpayee is currently the oldest living former Indian Prime Minister.
Mr. Vajpayee underwent total knee replacement surgery in 2001. He suffered a stroke in 2009 which impaired his speech. His health has been a major source of concern and he is often confined to a wheelchair and fails to recognise people.
He is suffering from dementia and long-term diabetes. He is not known to have attended any public event in recent years. He rarely ventures out of the house, except for checkups at AIIMS.
On Monday, the BJP stalwart was visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BJP veteran LK Advani and Union Health Minister JP Nadda among others.
Aarti Vij, chairperson of AIIMS' media and protocol division, said: "The former Prime Minister has been admitted for examination and management. He is stable." There was a risk of health emergency developing, sources said.
Mr. Vajpayee is under supervision of AIIMS director Randeep Guleria who has been treating him for nearly 15 years.
Meanwhile, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu tweeted on Tuesday morning that he has spoken to Guleria, the AIIMS director who is personally overseeing Mr. Vajpayee's treatment, who told him that "Shri Atal Ji is being given treatment appropriately with utmost care".
On Tuesday, Vaiko, founder and general secretary of the Tamil Nadu-based Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam also visited Mr. Vajpayee at AIIMS.
