Former militant reveals GNLA’s plan to unleash terror in Garo Hills; police on high alert

By Our Reporter, TNT News | Shillong, Feb 22, 2018:

A day after police received reports of over 20 IEDs being planted in Garo Hills by the Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) militants, another disquieting information has emerged which suggests that the outfit's chief, Sohan D Shira is planning to blast IED's on Siju-Baghmara road in South Garo Hills and Nengkhrah – Williamnagar road in East Garo Hills.

As per sources, the GNLA cadre who recently surrendered with the BSF revealed that Shira is planning to blast IED's on Siju-Baghmara road and Nengkhrah – Williamnagar road before the Assembly elections. It was also informed that at present Shira has over 5 IED's weighing around 35 kg and their main target are the security forces.

When contacted, East Garo Hills, Superintendent of Police, Ringrang T.G. Momin, confirmed that such information has been revealed to the BSF by the surrendered GNLA cadre.

Momin, however, said that there is no confirmation as to how much the information holds weight.

"We are not taking any chances and necessary actions are being initiated," said Momin further adding, "As of now we are not sure but combing operations of police along with the bomb squad is on to clear the area of any IED's if found and we are sanitizing the area".

On the other hand, BSF official sources confirmed having received the information adding that the surrendered cadre had revealed that the GNLA militants are carrying IEDs and may use against security forces.

The same information was also passed on to the Superintendent of Police of South Garo Hills who confirmed that they have received such an information.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Meghalaya DGP SB Singh said that all security measures have been taken to prevent any untoward incident from taking place.

It may be recalled that earlier reports suggested that the proscribed Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) had planted over 20 IEDs in and around East Garo Hills to sabotage the ensuing Assembly Elections in state, of which only three have been recovered.

Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer(CEO), FR Kharkongor, had informed that in view of the law and order situation prevailing in Garo Hills and also for the smooth conduct of elections, ten  additional companies of para military force will be posted in the Garo Hills Region along with the five companies of the state's elite SF- 10 commandoes.
