Exploring Meghalaya through its waterfalls!

Yet the rivers and the creeks,
slapping music on stone drums,
are full and clear as ever.

and Likai, ** wild with suicidal fury,
still plunges into its cerulean pool,
forever fleeing from a destiny
of beast-men and a wounded conscience.

Waterfalls have long found a place in the Indian tourist map and Meghalaya is blessed with many treacherous and breathtaking waterfalls. As the monsoon rains sets foot in the state, the tempestuous waterfalls gushes down with fury creating a picture that leaves onlookers in awe. These cascading waterfalls are no doubt, an example of nature's bounty. The waterfalls are largely rain-fed and the best time to visit and see them in full glory is definitely the monsoon season.
To seek the beauty of these waterfalls in Meghalaya, one will experience the thrill and passion that comes along the way before reaching their destination. The magical beauty that the state has to offer is one of the best in the country which leaves the visitor spell bound.
Below are some of the amazing vertical drops that should be in every traveller's list-
* Nohkalikai Falls– The tallest plunge waterfall in India, the Nohkalikai is linked to a legend about a woman by the name Likai who jumped off the cliff next to the falls. Located in Cherrapunji (Sohra) in East Khasi Hills, this waterfall is a major tourist attraction as it never fails to entice every visitor by its beauty.
* Langshiang Falls– The third highest waterfall in India, this waterfall is located in Sangriang, Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills. It offers one of the best panoramic views of the green lawn hills nearby surrounded by hamlets including the village of Mawpon.
* Kshaid Rashi or Wah Rashi– A haven of waterfalls, this magical beauty is located in Syntung village in Mawkynrew, East Khasi Hills. One of the few unexplored destinations, this place has left many awe-struck by the scenic beauty and the formation of the river by five waterfalls.
* Tdem Falls– Located in Amlarem, West Jaintia Hills District, and the enchanting Tdem Falls is indeed a sight to behold. Encircled by a rocky canyon, the Myntdu River tumbles down a steep slope to create this mesmerising waterfall.
* Tyrshi Falls– Located in the Shillong-Jowai Road (NH 44), this falls is about 5 km from Jowai. Tyrshi falls is one of the little treasures of Meghalaya. The beautiful falls gushes down in steps with the water spouting swiftly, looking like an enormous white veil.
* Pelga Falls– Located at a distance of 7 kms from Tura, this is one of the most visited waterfalls in Meghalaya. This waterfall has increasingly become a hot spot for anglers and picnickers in recent years.
* Nohsngithiang Falls– Known as the Seven Sisters Falls, Nohsngithiang is a seven segmented waterfall located near Mawsmai Village in East Khasi Hills District. This waterfall is at its magnificent glory during the monsoon season.
* Kynrem Falls– Situated near Thangkarang Park, Cherrapujee Sohra, Kynrem is a three-tiered waterfall. It is one of the famous tourist destinations, especially during the rainy season as visitors get to see this magnificent waterfall gushing down and spraying mist to onlookers.
Thus when one thinks of Meghalaya, one can always symbolize Waterfalls with the state as the list above is just a few to name but indeed the state is blessed with many unexplored destinations that every traveller should add to their bucket list.
