Darjeeling Unrest: Legislators, Gorkhas in Shillong extends support to Gorkhaland demand
SHILLONG, Jul 3 2017: Hundreds including legislators from Meghalaya lighted up candles at the candle light vigil organised by the Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) in condemnation to the alleged killing of three civilians by West Bengal police during the Darjeeling unrest.
People from various localities of the state took part in a quite and solemn candle light ceremony. Congress legislator, Al Hek soon after lighting the candle said, "I condemn the human right violation and pray for peace to return in the hills".
On Gorkhaland movement the congress legislator extended his support and said, "It is a good movement for the Gorkhas".
A member of the BGP, Pema Lama said, "We have gathered here to pay respect to the three innocent lives that were lost due to the unprovoked, irresponsible firing by the police in Darjeeling".
He asserted that Gorkhas have long face the brunt of identity crisis and the Gorkhaland movement is about identity for which the BGP and the Gorkha community of Meghalaya extends its full support .
United Democratic Party (UDP), Working President, Paul Lyngdoh too lighted a candle and prayed for peace to be restored in the hills.
