Assam: 4 killed as massive storm slams the state
Assam, March 3: At least four persons are feared dead while hundreds of houses and other property have been damaged across Assam as thunderstorm and heavy rains lashed the state over the last few days. Official sources said here today that two persons have been confirmed dead by floods and storm in Cachar district. One person each was reported missing in Cachar and Dima Hasao districts respectively.
Over 600 houses have been damaged in the state so far. A video-conference was conducted by the state disaster response authority with the deputy commissioners of the 10 affected districts. The Dima Hasao hills district has been the worst-hit so far where incessant rains have lashed the district for past couple of days, leading to landslides at several places.
Road communication has been snapped at many places, including the Silchar-Haflong and Haflong-Guwahati roads. The district administration also declared local holiday for all educational institutions in Dima Hasao in view of the inclement weather. Main city Guwahati witnessed nature's fury as strong winds and heavy downpour hit the city last evening. Water logging was reported from various parts of the city, though the situation eased as the day progressed today with respite in rainfall.
