Next-level social distancing: Village in Nebraska with a total population of 1

 |

WYOMING:

Elsie Eyler, of Monowi, Nebraska in the United States, is the only remaining resident of the village who pays her taxes, grants her own liquor license, advertises her mayoral elections, and votes for herself.

Her secluded life in the deserted town began when her husband passed away in 2004, making her the sole resident. Eyler is the town's mayor, bartender and librarian.

While the whole population of the world is becoming devastated because of the pandemic and social distancing norms, Eyle finds herself happy and not at all lonely. Her customers, from miles away, visit her frequently.

After World War II, farming conditions and rural economies worsened, making the entire communities of Monowi to look towards greener pastures. The post office and the last three grocery shops closed down between 1967 and 1970, as well as the school in 1974.

Her children also left in search for work and in no time, the population of the town decreased to two, making her and her husband the only residents.

But currently, Eyler manages her town alone and is the sole resident of Monowi.
